"Winter Scene", with man and boy walking through snow in Malvern, Worcestershire.

Superb watercolour, on paper, by William Stone (1842-1913) featuring snow-laden country lane at sunset, circa 1870.

The painting shows what looks to be father and son walking together. The pair hold hands up to help navigate knee-high snow. The setting sun casts shadows against their backs in the virgin drifts.

The valley is flanked by Malvern stone walls to the right and left. To the front and mid left are three leafless trees, their branches and bark dappled in snow. The foreground is a wooded shadow against a blazing red winter sky.

The painting has a range of rustic winter colour hues and texture depicting the quintessential English country scene in winter.

The picture is signed verso in 1926 as a Christmas gift, identifying the artist as W Stone.

Stone was born in Warwickshire, England. He was a prolific painter of winter landscapes in England and Wales, particularly around Worcestershire and Herefordshire. He also painted in the USA, and exhibited with the Royal Society of Birmingham Artists. Numerous galleries and museums feature Stone's work.

Also included with this purchase is information about The Stephen Neale Art Collection, from which the watercolour is taken, a certificate of authenticity, nd a short biograpy of William Stone.
